Step 1: Playing Conditions
Read below the game basic characteristics. If it is something you see yourself playing, move on to Step 2: Graphics & Sound.
At Minecraft Dungeons you will fight, fight and fight. Get ready to SMASH THAT ONE BUTTON for hours to honor the hack-and-slash subgenre.
Between the button smashing, there is also exploration and hero gearing. As you progress through the 9 missions of the game, your character will level up, find better gear, and unlock secret missions (5).
The variety of weapons, armors, and artifacts allows the SETUP OF DIFFERENT BUILDS and gameplay styles. A game characteristic that can be better explored when playing at COOP mode.
Remember that Minecraft Dungeons is INTENDED FOR KIDS, so the game is really SIMPLE AND EASY to feel in control after a couple of hours of gameplay.
Step 2: Graphics & Sound
Watch 5 to 10 minutes of any video below. If you like what you see and hear, move on to Step 3: Game Evaluation.
Step 3: Game Evaluation
Build your expectations about the game by learning what it offers and how was The Partisan Spy’s experience.
The UI brings every element of the game together to help you understand the game. It has 3 SCREENS: gameplay, hero inventory, and world map.
The HUD is similar to some dungeon crawlers and the levels map overlay the gameplay screen allowing you to keep playing while seeing the map.
Like all other variables of the game, the story is simple and easy to understand. At the beginning of every level, there is a cutscene and VO that place the mission into the plot of the story. After beating the game for the first time, the story does LOSE ITS WEIGHT and can even be qualified as secondary.
Minecraft is one of the most successful game franchises in the industry and every new game that carries this name will get its portion of attention. Added to that, the game was developed for a COOP experience, bringing together friends and family.
New DLC coming 2 months after game release will increase its LIFE SPAN ATTENTION.
GAMEPLAY MOOD TRACKER
The mood tracker results can be divided into 2 sections, before and after completing the game for the first time. In the first run, my mood was between ENTERTAINED and EXCITED, while in the second and third run was between NORMAL and ENTERTAINED. Game bugs and grind feeling also influenced on my mood, as novelty faded away, repetition became more present and humor levels decreased. The average mood ends in ENTERTAINED, with a descending trend to NORMAL.
The grind feeling appeared at the end of the first run. Constantly killing mobs can bring the sensation of repetition and the feeling grows as you have to replay levels at harder difficulties. The difference between difficulties (default, adventure, and apocalypse) is basically mobs get more hp and hit harder. The GAME OBJECTIVE SHIFTS from beating it to grinding gear and levels to your hero. Possibly, at this point, the more the game is played, the stronger the grind feeling will be.
LIKED THE MOST
To experience the Minecraft world in a different way and game, out of the sandbox.
DISLIKED THE MOST
It could have different ways to use the emeralds (in-game currency), instead of just RNG vendors for artifacts and gear.
Minecraft Dungeons could have been anything it wanted to be. It could have been as complex as an MMO or as simple as a casual game, a privilege of choice that only a hand-full of games have.
It chose to be a “side-quest”, an EXCELLENT BREATHER FOR MINECRAFT players to take a break when feeling overwhelmed by the sandbox.
Possibly the best way to describe Minecraft Dungeons is by categorizing it as a “Lego Legacy Game”. Lego games are fun because they are simple, easy to play and expectations are towards the Lego universe regardless of the “skin it is wearing”.
For example, Lego Star Wars don’t offer a Star Wars movie experience, it’s a Lego universe “dressed” as Star Wars and that’s the fun of it. Rip-off the skins, take the pieces apart and it will be just another action adventure game.
As all 34 titles of Lego games, Minecraft Dungeons IS FUN AS IT IS BECAUSE IT’S MINECRAFT. Rip-off the skins, break the blocks and you will find just another action adventure game. And guess what, there is nothing wrong with that if you know what you are buying into and you are having fun with it.
Choices & Advice
DON’T BUY IT
IF YOU ARE NOT A MINECRAFT FAN AND/OR PREFER MORE COMPLEX GAMES.
WAIT TO BUY
IF YOU PLAN TO PLAY IT IN SOLO MODE AND CAN WAIT FOR A SALE.
IF YOU PLAN TO PLAY IT WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS IN COOP MODE AND WANT TO LIVE THE HYPE.
GAME CAN BE 100% COMPLETED IN 30-45 HOURS, DEPENDING ON HOW MANY LEVELS YOU WANT TO REPEAT.
