Step 1: Playing Conditions
Read below the game basic characteristics. If it is something you see yourself playing, move on to Step 2: Graphics & Sound.
Gameplay Overview
You’ve watched it, now you can be the LEAD of the story. Stranger Things 3: The Game (ST3) is based on the new season of the show. If you still hadn’t had enough, the game can help extend your hype feeling. Obviously or not, ST3 was developed for fans, so being a fan is an influential factor in players’ experience. On the practical side, PC mechanics are different from Console versions. Game on PC is based on POINT & CLICK which influences gameplay experience and difficulty.
Step 2: Graphics & Sound
Watch 5 to 10 minutes of any video below. If you like what you see and hear, move on to Step 3: Game Evaluation.
Step 3: Game Evaluation
Build your expectations about the game by learning what it offers and how was The Partisan Spy’s experience.
USER INTERFACE
Traditional UI with some LIMITATIONS (PC version):
- No keybinding config option: game needs to be played with default config.
- No saving game option: can’t have different games in progress.
- No language selection option.
STORY
The story is not just the GAME BASIS, but the reason why the game exists. Stranger Things became such a huge TV show that it had the strength to launch a second game (first one was launched in 2017 for mobile only). The game story is as big as it is on tv, every quest is directly related to it.
COMMUNITY POTENTIAL
ST3 was developed to be a SUPPORT asset to the new season launch. There is no sign of an ambition to build a community around the game. In fact, there is already a Stranger Things show community and the purpose of the game is to give them a different experience.
MOOD ANALYSIS
The storyline controlled my mood during the 25 hours. You get used to its mechanics and elements early in the game. As quests built up to key moments, my mood tended to follow the narrative. It was between NORMAL and EAGER during most parts of the game, with 4 spikes to EXCITED in crucial moments of the story.
GRIND FEELING
ST3 looks simple, but there is a REFINED complexity behind its appearance. The game presents its mechanics and from there gives players MULTIPLE choices on how to play. It’s hard to experience any grind feeling with 12 different characters to play, trinket party builds, and quests that go from finding clues, solving puzzles to fighting mobs.
EVALUATION SUMMARY
“Promotional” games are usually seen as an opportunity companies take to make some extra cash. So it’s natural not to expect much of games associated with movies or TV shows. There is no doubt that the price of the game carries Stranger Thing’s brand weight.
On the other hand, ST3 offers UNIQUE gameplay elements and a complexity that moves it away from being just a “promotional” casual game.
