Game Description
Super Meat Boy Forever takes place a few years after the events of Super Meat Boy. Meat Boy and Bandage Girl have been living a happy life free of Dr. Fetus for several years and they now have a wonderful little baby named Nugget. Nugget is joy personified and she is everything to Meat Boy and Bandage Girl. One day while our heroes were on a picnic, Dr. Fetus snuck up on them, beat Meat Boy and Bandage Girl unconscious… (continues…)
Step 1: Playing Conditions
Read below the game basic characteristics. If it is something you see yourself playing, move on to Step 2: Graphics & Sound.
Gameplay Overview
You play Super Meat Boy Forever (SMBF) with 2 buttons: jump + punch, and slide. That’s it. But don’t be mistaken, SIMPLE DOESN’T MEAN EASY. The sequel can be considered even harder than the first game of the series.
The biggest change is that SMBF is an AUTO-RUNNER, in other words, Meat Boy runs non-stop. To keep him alive, timing and precision are key. There are 6 chapters, dozens of levels, all multiplied by 2. Levels replayability is a huge factor for those who aim to complete 100% of the game. To have fun playing SMBF you need to be open to the “repeat till perfectly done” gameplay style.
Step 2: Graphics & Sound
Watch 5 to 10 minutes of any video below. If you like what you see and hear, move on to Step 3: Game Evaluation.
Step 3: Game Evaluation
Build your expectations about the game by learning what it offers and how was The Partisan Spy’s experience.
USER INTERFACE
As simple as the game controls, so is the UI. The menu brings the game basic settings and gameplay info, while the HUD displays the level time tracker and progression bar. The interface to select chapters and levels are also really easy to understand.
STORY
The story brings you closer to the main characters of the game. It has JOYFUL CUTSCENES at the beginning and end of every chapter.
A nice extra to have as it’s clear that the MAIN DRIVER of the game is to complete 100% of every chapter.
COMMUNITY POTENTIAL
Even though Super Meat Boy is a PVE indie game, for the last 10 years it has built a SOLID COMMUNITY around it.
SMBF will benefit from that as it has a fair amount of content to speed-runners and creators work with during the next year.
GAMEPLAY MOOD TRACKER
MOOD ANALYSIS
Your mood will vary accordingly to the likings of the grind proposed by the game.
PERSEVERANCE AND RESILIENCE are must-have traits to enjoy SMBF and value the small victories during the grind to achieve 100% game completion. My mood had a higher average during the story part when compared to the grinding stage.
GRIND FEELING
Grind is an essential part of SMBF gameplay experience. The real game challenge starts after beating its storyline.
“Impossible levels” were created to keep you, REPEATING OVER AND OVER AGAIN the same moves until you get it perfect. Long playing sessions of SMBF can be really tiring because of these characteristics.
LOVED THE MOST
The cutscenes and the storytelling are simple, cute and a real pleasure to watch.
DISLIKED THE MOST
It could be more clear on how to unlock levels and complete 100% of chapters.
EVALUATION SUMMARY
Super Meat Boy Forever presents itself as being more friendly to mobile users and a bit controversial to some pc/console players. Opinions apart, the auto-runner feature reassures what everyone already knew… SMBF is a CASUAL AND TIME KILLING GAME.
Despite that change, the “heart and soul” of Super Meat Boy is still there.
Frustration and happiness still are compatible feelings when playing SMBF. Continuously dying at the same spot, builds up frustration until you make it through and is rewarded with a rush of happiness. And… based on my experience, the higher the number of deaths, the happier you get at the end.
It is also still there the challenge to the presumption that simple is easy. Most of us tend to assume that simple should be easy and ACCEPTING THAT A 2 BUTTON GAME CAN BE HARD, will make you keep playing till you prove the world wrong.
After 10 years (oh, yes… let’s not forget the release delays, still there), we got a new Super Meat Boy. Let’s play it slow and enjoy it for the next decade.
